Glucose Absorption in the Cockroach

چکیده

The physiology of absorption from the gut in insects has been little studied. In particular there is a paucity of information on the absorption of nutrient substances from the gut. Much of what is known on this subject is qualitative in nature, and has usually been indirectly derived from specialized investigations on digestion or storage of nutrient materials. The majority of these studies have been adequately summarized in the review by Waterhouse & Day (1953). In the present investigation the absorption of C-labelled glucose from the gut of the adult cockroach {Periplaneta americand) has been studied, using a dye, Amaranth, as a marker. The dye is not absorbed from the lumen of the cockroach gut and thus the percentage absorption of glucose can be calculated from the glucose/dye ratio in the various parts of the gut. This technique has been recently used by Reynell & Spray (1956a) using phenol red as a marker to study intestinal absorption in the rat. Phenol red is, however, unsuitable for the study of poorly absorbed substances, since these authors were only able to get a 90 % recovery of the dye from the intestine. Amaranth, at least in the cockroach, is not limited in this way, for it was possible to recover this dye quantitatively.

The absorption of glucose from the alimentary canal.

INTRODUCTION In a recent investigation (Treherne, 1957) it was demonstrated that glucose absorption in the cockroach was largely confined to the mid-gut caeca. It was also shown that the amount of glucose absorbed was related to crop emptying, so that the limiting process in absorption was not the transfer of glucose across the gut wall but the rate at which fluid was allowed to leave the crop....

The Study of Cockroach Allergy in Iranian Children with Asthma

Background: Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood. Exposure to allergens plays an important role in asthma. Recently, cockroach has attracted attentions as an important allergen. Objective: To evaluate cockroach allergy in Iranian children with asthma. Methods: 100 children with asthma were studied. After determination of asthma severity, serum total IgE and blood eosinophils w...

Water Vapour Absorption by the Desert Burrowing Cockroach, Arenivaga Investigata: Evidence against a Solute Dependent Mechanism

1. Solute concentrations were measured in the frontal bodies and hypopharyngeal bladder surfaces, which form the absorption system of Arenivaga. Measured values were compared with the concentrations necessary to lower relative humidity to the absorption threshold, 81% R.H. 2. The predominant inorganic solutes, measured by instrumental neutron activation analysis, were Na, K, and Cl. Their conce...

Evaluation of bacterial infection of external surface and digestive system of cockroach species

Introduction: The presence of cockroaches has health implications, such as nosocomial infection, as the insects move freely from areas within and around hospitals that may harbor pathogenic organisms. The aims of the present study were to detect cockroach species and bacterial infection transmitted by their surface and their digestive system. Methods: In this study we caught 250 cockroac...
